Bournemouth Sea Cadets & Royal Marines Cadets Go Green! Improving Our Unit for a Brighter, Greener Future

Bournemouth Sea Cadets Light the Way with New Energy Efficiency Project
Bournemouth Sea Cadets & Royal Marines Cadets have completed a major energy efficiency upgrade of our Unit, with improvements that not only cut energy consumption but also enhance safety and comfort for all who use the facility.
The project included the full replacement of 42 outdated internal light fittings, 7 six-foot battens, and 8 external emergency fittings with modern, energy-efficient LED lighting. An additional upgrade was also made to bring 12 emergency light fittings up to current standards.
Alongside the lighting improvements, the unit also completed vital window repairs, replacing several double-glazed units, fixing faulty handles, and restoring opening mechanisms to ensure improved ventilation and insulation.
The results will be noticeable:
– The LED upgrade is saving approximately 52% on annual lighting energy costs, with an estimation of £1500/£2000
– this upgrade is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 0.72 tonnes per year, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future for the community.
This is equivalent to:

~3,000 km driven by a petrol car avoided
~11 tree seedlings grown for 10 years
~1 long-haul flight avoided per year

– Improved building comfort, security, and accessibility
Unit Chair Roberto Rocca said:
“This project is a smart investment in our future. It helps us save money, reduce our carbon footprint, and ensures our centre is safe, comfortable, and welcoming for our cadets, volunteers, and the wider community. We also plan to reinvest the savings directly into training and educational programmes for our 50 cadets.”
Bournemouth Sea Cadets & Royal Marines Cadets gratefully acknowledge the generous support of The Gosling Foundation and Sea Cadets HQ, whose funding made this project possible.
This energy efficiency project is part of a wider sustainability vision, which includes exploring solar power and further building improvements to ensure the unit remains resilient and future-ready.
