Bournemouth University has risen five places in the People & Planet University League this year and is now ranked sixth out of 147 UK universities.
The league is an independent university table in the UK and assesses institutions based on their environmental and ethical performances. It is run by the student campaign network, People and Planet.
Bournemouth University (BU) was ranked joint first in the Water Reduction category for its rainwater harvesting and low water consumption per person.
It also ranked joint first in the Energy Sources category due the percentage of renewable energy generated on campus (7% for electricity and 16% for heat in 2024/25) and the fact all electricity purchased is from a green tariff. The university also performed well in Ethical Investment and Banking and Staff and Student Engagement.
Sustainability and Workplace Manager, Lois Betts, said: “I am proud to see BU’s continued efforts to be a sustainable university resulting in our rank rising to 6th in the UK this year. This rank reflects the data we collect from our energy and water meters which shows that our buildings perform well by generating energy renewably on site and using rainwater to supplement our water consumption.
“It also reflects our polices and educational programmes which support our students to gain valuable skills to address issues of sustainable development as part of their future careers. We continue to challenge ourselves to do more and I thank everyone in the BU community for pushing for progress across all areas.”
