Business support with a focus on people

Posted on: 14/09/2021

The Curious Companions, based near Dorchester, officially launched last month with the aim of helping small owner-managed businesses across the south-west to grow and develop their businesses in an ethical and people-focussed way.

Discovering that many small business owners they spoke to were struggling to find the time to focus on developing their business and finding it difficult to access or afford some of the skills or expertise they needed, Dan Severn and Emma Northover, partners at The Curious Companions, saw an opportunity to help these business owners by offering a service which is more hands-on than a traditional consultancy arrangement, but more flexible and affordable then recruiting senior-level employees.

They have set up their business with a clear purpose: to share a message that they are passionate about. They believe that businesses who care for, trust, and inspire their people are more likely to grow and thrive for the long term. As Dan explains, “profits should be the result of doing something you love with people you trust and not the reason for doing what you do”.

Dan and Emma discovered their shared passion for people-centred business while working together as CEO and CFO for a global medical device manufacturer. They also found that their vastly different backgrounds in physiotherapy and accountancy respectively gave them differing perspectives, experiences, and skillsets which complemented each other well and allowed them to add more value to the business by working together than they could have achieved individually. Emma adds “we love working together and we’re really looking forward to building lasting relationships with our clients and sharing the highs and lows of their business journeys with them”.

Together with their network of trusted and experienced companions who bring expertise in specific areas, The Curious Companions are offering support to like-minded people with strategic planning, financial management, business development, marketing, people management and leadership. They have a relaxed and friendly approach and aim to provide most of the skills that businesses need in a simple, flexible, and affordable way, with support ranging from ad-hoc one-hour sessions to one or two days per week.
