Chair of DCCI Council is Rotary Wessex District Governor

Posted on: 15/12/2016

"The Rotary District 1110 Conference, held in Cardiff, was a most enjoyable weekend and Wimborne Rotary was proud to be the Host Club supporting our District Governor Chris Slocock a past President of Wimborne Rotary. We were involved in stewarding which gave us an insight into how a conference works from the inside and everyone enjoyed the unusual role.
The speakers this year provided a great variety of subjects, both serious and not-so-serious. From Pilgrim Bandits (ex SAS) telling of amputees undertaking the most gruelling adventures to Lydia Slack’s off-beat humour of sheep farming, with so many interesting projects in between.
We heard about a Rotary Foundation-assisted project by Romsey Test Rotary, supporting Dentaid in Timor Leste which included a vocation training team. In addition, a partnerships for communities local project by Blandford Rotary restoring a neglected area beside the River Stour, making it accessible to everyone including the disabled.
On a lighter note, we enjoyed an Abba concert which inspired people to dance, singing by the Caerphilly Male Voice Choir and a most entertaining talk by Ann Widdecombe, who sold her autobiography afterwards and donated some of the proceeds to End Polio Now, as did Yayu Slocock selling her recipe book. Mersey Legends, who played after the Gala Dinner, kept the dance floor full all evening, playing music we all remembered and sang to!]
Julia Phelps, the President of Rotary International’s representative, brought us his message in a compelling way and was probably one of the best representatives we have heard. As well as hearing from Linda Pratley, the Inner Wheel Chairman, we also had interesting presentations by Cardiff Interactors and Rotaractors.
A busy but fun weekend."
Sue Young
President, Wimborne Rotary
