FOCUS ON RECRUITMENT: Employability Skills and Young Workers

Young workers have been hit the hardest by rising unemployment during the Covid pandemic, with those under the age of 35 accounting for almost 80% of jobs lost in the past year.

Official figures show youth long-term unemployment has hit a five-year high, with more than 200,000 under 25s out of work for more than six months. Under 25’s were more likely to be furloughed than any other age group as hospitality, retail and jobs that cannot be done from home and employing a predominantly young workforce was hit the hardest.

As we see the country start to emerge from the pandemic and businesses tentatively open and start recruiting it is important that young workers know what employers are looking for and how to make themselves stand out in a crowd of potential candidates. Many employers do not recruit on qualifications alone, which is why developing employability skills is crucial.

The most common employability skills employers like to explore are: – Problem Solving, Teamwork, Digital Skills, Motivation, Positive Self Belief, Emotional Intelligence, Curiosity, A Love Of Learning, Resilience, communication and Creative Thinking.  These skills can be achieved in a number of ways including engaging in part time work, sports, drama and other extra-curricular activities, clubs, societies and voluntary work including the Duke Of Edinburgh Awards scheme.  There is also a plethora of online resources to help.

So whether you are a young person returning to the workplace or entering the workforce for the first time or the parent of a young person, take the time to consider not only qualifications but also employability skills.  It could make all the difference.
