Former Chancellor Philip Hammond speaks to members

Dorset Chamber is affiliated to the British Chambers of Commerce, which has run a series of high-profile online events.  Following a Q&A with former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, this month members heard from former Chancellor Philip Hammond on tackling the economic challenges of Coronavirus and the end of the UK Transition period.

During the Q&A Mr Hammond highlighted the underlying challenges in the high street and how the cashless economy has taken leaps forward during COVID19.  There were questions about the changes within the workspace, will businesses go back full time to the office? What will be the effect of less demand for office space?

Other topics covered included the fallout from Brexit. He believes there will be radical change, and British businesses need to be prepared for it. If a deal is done there will be cooperation with our neighbours. If there is no deal, the UK will more likely be left to deal with it.

r Hammond also discussed the future challenges for Britain, the fourth industrial revolution (digital), an ageing society and decarbonisation. He said the challenge is for Government to set out a clear framework of how we deal with these other long-term challenges to face as a country.
