Healthwatch Dorset Report: Urgent Healthcare for the Homeless

Healthwatch Dorset publishes a report on the urgent need for improved healthcare for the homeless

Healthwatch Dorset has released its latest report, “Voiceless, Unheard and Socially Excluded,” which brings to light the immense challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness and those who are vulnerably housed when attempting to access health and social care services. The report, published on Wednesday, 11th September 2024, highlights not only the systemic barriers that hinder access to essential services but also the complex and often harsh realities these individuals endure in their daily lives.

This comprehensive report reflects the voices of those who are too often ignored, showcasing the dire need for systemic change within the healthcare and social care sectors across Dorset. The findings reveal a troubling landscape of exclusion and hardship, urging policymakers, healthcare providers, and the community to take immediate and effective action.

The HealthBus Trust, an award-winning charity, continues to provide critical healthcare services directly to people experiencing homelessness and stands as a vital link between the streets and mainstream services. By delivering care at the point of need, HealthBus is committed to ensuring that those who are most vulnerable receive the attention and support they deserve.

“We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to this report, especially our patients, whose open and honest conversations made this possible,” said HealthBus Chairman Christopher Wakefield. “Their willingness to share their stories has shed light on the urgent need for change. We hope this report will serve as a catalyst for significant improvements in how health and social care services are delivered to those in need.”

HealthBus Executive Director, Deano Pickering emphasises, “This report serves as a crucial wake-up call to the health sector across Dorset. Immediate action is essential to drive systemic change and enhance access for vulnerable patients, ensuring that health equity is achieved across all sectors of our community.”

The HealthBus charity remains dedicated to its mission of bridging the gap between the street and mainstream services, advocating for a healthcare system that is inclusive, compassionate, and accessible to all.
