Landowners urged to take opportunity to shape future of housing development in Dorset

With the next step in the drafting of Dorset Council’s Local Plan underway, landowners are being urged to take the opportunity to shape the future of housing development in the county.

The draft Dorset Council Local Plan will be discussed at a cabinet meeting this week (December 8th) ahead of consultation in January next year.

Dorset Council is preparing its first Local Plan having been formed by a union of six former district, borough and county councils. The plan outlines the strategy for ensuring the growth that the area needs happens in the right places, and is of the right character and quality, while protecting Dorset’s natural environment and acting on climate change.

The draft plan includes information on favourable allocations across the county so far and there is still opportunity for sites to be put forward for potential development ahead of the consultation early next year.

Marja Wilding of Savills development said: “The mounting pressure to identify land required to meet the ever growing housing need means many sites on the edge of existing towns and villages are being seen as viable options. Whilst several larger allocations have been identified there is particular opportunity for smaller development sites.

Alison Broderick of Savills planning said: “This opportunity to influence planning policy and attain favourable allocations crucial to the success of future applications is not to be missed. We are currently involved in numerous sites across the county and are encouraging those with land which might have potential to get in touch.
