Lewis-Manning Hospice Care Scholarship students receive recognition awards at annual Bournemouth University Faculty of Nursing and Social Sciences Student Awards Ceremony
Five adult nursing students at Bournemouth University, who last year received acceptance onto the 2022/23 Scholarship scheme with Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, received recognition of their funded scholarships at the prestigious, annual BU (Bournemouth University) Faculty of Health & Social Sciences Student Awards Ceremony on the 28th of June 2023.
The scholarships have been kindly supported by the local hospice charity via their partnership with The Burdett Trust for Nursing.
Students, Grace Lawrence, Maria-Gorati Okeke, Tyler Trifari, Katie Butler and Millie Gray were presented with their awards by Lewis-Manning Hospice Care Academic Advisor Dr Linda Thompson and Chief Executive Officer Clare Gallie.
Dr Sue Baron PhD, RN, RNT, FHEA, PGCertEd, BSc (Hons) Senior Lecturer, Programme Lead for MSc Adult Nursing at Bournemouth University said, "I feel very privileged to be working closely with Lewis-Manning Hospice Care and able to offer these prestigious scholarships in Palliative and End of Life Care to our nursing students which are supported by generous funding from The Burdett Trust for Nursing.
“We have received very positive feedback from current and former awardees about this extra-curricular development opportunity, and have already received enquiries and applications for next year’s awards. Since we first offered this scholarship in 2021, conversations about the importance of palliative and end-of-life care have increased among our nursing students and faculty, and greater emphasis is being placed on enabling nursing students to prepare appropriately and effectively for delivering this vital aspect of patient care wherever and whenever this is required.”
The award-winning students were asked about how they feel about the scholarship and how it has been benefitting them in their studies:
· Grace – “Being awarded the scholarship has felt like the biggest privilege. It has opened up many channels and enabled new connections with unique professionals who share my passion for reducing inequalities in end-of-life care to be formed. I am forever grateful for this opportunity and the support I have received throughout.”
· Maria – “I am grateful to be among the scholarship awardees because this opportunity was very helpful financially and career wise. Also being my first-ever scholarship, it has motivated me to strive to achieve more excellence in my career.”
· Tyler – “This scholarship has given me the opportunity to learn valuable skills in end-of-life care, especially during my project. It has also given me connections and resources I would not have otherwise had, and I will be using this throughout my career development."
· Katie –“The Lewis Manning Hospice Care scholarship has been an amazing opportunity to expand my knowledge and love for palliative care. It has allowed me additional opportunities which I may not have had and given me a boost in confidence that I can one day make a difference.”
· Millie – The scholarship has been an amazing learning experience. I have had access to a wealth of knowledge and expertise, and I can't wait to graduate to use it all to help patients. Lewis-Manning has been excellent, and I can't recommend this charity enough.”
Hospice CEO Clare Gallie commented, “It’s wonderful to recognise the students in this way and to see how the scholarships have supported them in their studies and influenced their experiences in end-of-life care, something that we hope will encourage more students to specialise in this important area of nursing. We’re very grateful to the Burdett Trust for Nursing for their generous support of this scholarship programme.”
