A drive to bring more local women into the bus industry has been so successful that local operator Morebus is to host an additional ‘try it’ event in Bournemouth next month.
“We were delighted to welcome many women to our most recent event at Bournemouth University – which gave them a chance to get behind the wheel and see what it’s really like to drive a bus. Now we want to encourage others to get on-board,” said Morebus head of communications, Nikki Honer.
“It’s easier than many people realise. Some of those who previously ‘had a go’ enjoyed it so much, they have already received job offers and are undergoing their training with us.
“With women vastly under-represented in our industry, we want to keep this momentum going. A lot of local women may have been working temporarily in retail or hospitality over the festive period. Now those roles have come to an end, we’re offering the perfect opportunity to kick off 2025 with a career that provides a whole lot more financial security.
“Our event at Bournemouth University on Saturday 1 February offers participants a chance to drive a bus around a specially laid-out course to see if it’s for them. It’s also an opportunity to chat to our existing female bus drivers and trainers – who will all be very happy to share their own experiences.
“Some women have told us they don’t feel they could drive a bus, and we want to prove them wrong. Those with a background in customer service will be particularly welcome and, if they join us, they will be paid whilst they complete their bus driver training.
“Our team is very much looking forward to meeting a new contingent of potential team members later this month.”
The special ‘try it’ event will take place between 9am and midday on Saturday 1 February at Bournemouth University, car park H, Cutler Close, Bournemouth, BH12 5HS.
