The bright red coats and jaunty hats of Wimborne’s famous militia are a familiar site at special occasions in the town. Now Wimborne Minster’s very own historical town protectors and famous re-enactment group of 1685 are hosting their own celebrations, inviting the people of Wimborne to join them for a free two-day family festival during the weekend of Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September.
Over these two days, the Militia encampment will be set up at the field near Julian’s Bridge, which can be accessed immediately before the bridge on the left as leaving the town.
Here you can witness ancient skills in action. From the making of cannon balls in a 17th century armoury to the making of bread in a historical kitchen, there’s a host of by-gone skills which will be bought to life and up-close by colourful characters.
Learn about leatherworking or try your hand at writing with a quill and ink. Look inside the lively Tavern or visit the resplendent Gentlemen’s Residence to discover how the other half lived!
The Wimborne Militia will be joined by historical societies and experts from all over the country to create these Living History demonstrations throughout the weekend. There will also be 17th century live music and a chance to explore an 18th century gun deck.
An outside arena will host spectacular historical demonstrations and theatrical performances throughout the weekend. On the Saturday night, there’s a chance to listen to Tchaikovsky’s iconic 1812 overture as it was meant to be performed – with live cannon fire!
A Talkie Tent will host a rolling programme of fascinating talks and speakers throughout the weekend including an insight into the history of Wimborne’s famous militia plus the world of 17th century celebrities as notable speakers from that era recount some wonderful tales.
If you’ve ever fancied joining the militia, there’s a chance to have a go at carrying out musket and cannon drills or test your aim on a fun Paintball Musket Range. Will you be good enough to win your Militia Encampment pass?
Chris Brown, Town Mayor’s Sergeant for Wimborne Militia and the man who came up with the idea of reinstating a town militia said: “We want to thank the people of Wimborne for all their support over the past 25 years with this special festival. We’d love to hear from local charities and organisations who help make Wimborne the great town it is today who may like to do a community talk or have a free stall at the event.”
This event is being funded by the Wimborne Militia with support from Wimborne Minster Town Council and the Wimborne BID.
Tammy Sleet, Wimborne BID manager said: “The Militia are a great asset to the town and the BID are delighted to support this community-focused event. It’s a terrific way to round off our Summer of History programme for this year.”
