Networking Works! Putting the ‘Secure’ in COVID-Secure: How one Dorset Business Helped a Community

When Chamber members Morgan Leadbitter Managing Direcor at Nunet Ltd and Stephen Nicholls Managing Director at Quadrant Safety attended one of Dorset Chamber’s fortnightly online Simply events, they were there to make new contacts and reconnect with existing ones.

They were also there to make the most of the break out rooms which form part of the event – ‘round the table’ informal platforms managed by friendly facilitators for businesses to outline their products and services to a small group of others, before switching rooms.

On this occasion, Stephen, whose Health, Safety and Environmental compliance company prides itself on ‘taking the complication out of compliance’, offered to help local businesses to ensure their premises are COVID secure. This struck a chord with Morgan who, in his capacity of Chairman at East Dorset Dockers Rugby Club – a voluntary community role – was in the process of discussing this vey matter with the Club’s committee.

After the meeting Morgan got in touch with Stephen, who was engaged to provide a risk assessment, safe working procedure, and provide general advice. Advice was also provided with a risk assessment demanded by the local authority to repair a floodlight which required work at height operations. Stephen visited the premises to make an assessment and provide a bespoke risk assessment and Health and Safety audit. The result was a plan designed to be proportionate to the Club’s needs, with achievable actions.

The Club was successfully able to demonstrate Health and Safety compliance with physical and documentary proof of health and safety controls in place within the clubhouse, and to continue to stay open in a COVID-19 secure manner. The risk assessment was also reviewed and updated following the introduction of the ‘rule of 6’.

Stephen said: “Under statutory Health and Safety Law, while organisations with fewer than 5 employees like East Dorset Dockers do not have to provide documentation for Health and Safety compliance such as risk assessments, it is always best practice that they do. If anything, under current circumstances, it is even more critical where premises are public facing. We take the hard work out of this aspect and provide clients with a full service. It was good to be working with a community club that took this aspect of its responsibility seriously too.

Morgan was more than happy with the service provided by Quadrant Safety. He said: “By bringing in a professional we were able to remove any ambiguity on how we should go about implementing the Government’s guidelines, which were open to interpretation, depending on the setting, and subject to change. As a public space used by our wider membership, we did not want to leave anything to chance. By using the services of Quadrant Safety, all our bases were more than covered; the committee was unanimously behind the proposals and we were able to present the final action plan to our members with confidence. We were also really happy with the personal as well as professional service. The ongoing refurbishment project and changes from Government meant we did have some questions arising, and Stephen was always very happy to help.

Now the two members have connected, they are talking about taking the relationship further, with the potential for Stephen to support Nunet Ltd with ISO9001 compliance implementation. Nunet’s, core businesses is specialising in bespoke ring binders, folders, boxes and wallets, but it also diversified during the pandemic to provide PPE for NHS staff, and latterly developed affordable desk shield solutions for staff to work safely under current COVID guidance. Acquiring ISO9001 would enable the company to expand its reach and bid for contracts requiring the international standard.

And it all started with a little online networking…
