New dates for Roman Town House tours

Discover the history of Roman Dorchester on a Roman Town House Tour this summer with Dorset Museum & Art Gallery in partnership with Dorset Council.

The Roman Town House in Dorchester is one of the best examples of its kind in England and is one of several Roman sites found in and around this area. New dates for August have been released and are available to book on the Dorset Museum & Art Gallery website (dorsetmuseum.org), see the full list of dates below:

Saturday 3 August, 10:00am – 12:00noon
Saturday 17 August, 10:00am – 12:00noon
Saturday 31 August, 10:00am – 12:00noon

Tours begin at Dorset Museum & Art Gallery where trained guides will deliver a presentation on the history of Roman Dorchester (Durnovaria) and what life was like in this period. After this, there will be a guided viewing of the Roman artefacts on display in the People’s Dorset gallery. Finally, there will be a site visit to the Roman Town House itself, where attendees will not only be able to explore the grounds but will also be granted exclusive access inside the Roman Town House structure to see the mosaics up close.

Included in the ticket price is day access to the Museum as well as a copy of the Roman Town House Guide to take home. Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society members and Dorset Museum & Art Gallery unlimited ticketholders can get discounted rates for the tour but must bring their membership card or valid unlimited ticket with them.

Each tour is limited to 12 participants. The tours are fully accessible but sturdy shoes are required as the internal structure is uneven. Tours are not suitable for children under the age of five. There are no toilets or facilities at the Roman Town House site, although these are available at the Museum before and after the tour.

Tickets can be booked online at https://www.dorsetmuseum.org/romantownhouse/ or in person at the Museum shop.
