- Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital has performed its 2000th Mako® robot-assisted surgical procedure, for people from the local community having knee and hip replacements.

December 2024 – Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital has performed its 2000th surgery with the Mako® robot, which enables consultant surgeons to carry out more precise knee and hip replacements, with patients likely to experience less pain and faster recoveries.
Hip and knee replacements are two of the most common surgical procedures in the UK, and the need for these treatments is increasing. Research published by the Royal College of Surgeons estimates that by 2060 the demand for hip and knee joint replacements could rise by almost 40%.[1]
The Mako® robot is manufactured by Stryker and is an innovative system that works by using a robotic-arm to remove damaged bone and cartilage and precisely position the new hip or knee implant, with consultant surgeons creating a bespoke 3D model using the Mako® software based on a patient’s anatomy from an in-depth CT scan.
Professor Robert Middleton, an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Nuffield Health Bournemouth hospital, has been one of a number of consultants, who have been pivotal to the success of MAKO robotic-assisted surgery.
Professor Robert Middleton remarked:
“The 2000th Mako Robotic Hip and Knee replacement is a great achievement for the Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital. It was one of the first hospitals in Europe to introduce this new technology. Research carried out with the Orthopaedic Research Institute, Bournemouth University, shows greater accuracy and better outcomes for patients. I would like to congratulate all the team at the Nuffield Health for their hard work and dedication in improving hip and knee replacement for all our patients.”
Natalie Kemp, Hospital Director at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, said:
