Nuffield Health’s Successful GP Training Programme to be Supported by Dorset Primary Care Workforce Centre, in Conjunction With Bournemouth University

Nuffield Health Hospital in Bournemouth has run a comprehensive educational programme for Dorset-based GPs since 2015 and following its success, has been confirmed as one of the main educational providers for postgraduate education for GPs in Dorset.

The Dorset Primary Care Workforce Centre is a local collaboration between Health Education Wessex, Bournemouth University and Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group. It provides and supports training, research and career support to healthcare practitioners and other practice staff across all GP practices in Dorset.

The Dorset Primary Care Workforce Centre has combined resources with Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital to support Dorset-based GPs with educational courses facilitated by leading consultants that will take place throughout 2018.

Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital’s Primary Care Manager Shirley Ewart, has worked at the hospital since January 2015. Since her appointment she has developed a successful GP education programme at Nuffield Health which ran 63 events in 2016 and 90 events in 2017.

Shirley Ewart, Primary Care Manager at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, said: “Nuffield Health Bournemouth has always supported local GPs but when I took on the role two years ago it was our intention to develop a programme that would engage with our local community of GPs and provide further education and training.

“The events we currently run are always well received and we’re excited at the prospect of partnering with the Dorset Primary Care Workforce Centre on a programme of GP events in 2018, which will include events for sessional GPs and First5 GPs.”

Professor Chantal Simon, Programme Director (CPD) from the Dorset Primary Care Workforce Centre, who is also a local General Practitioner, added: “Our remit is to ensure that all healthcare professionals in Dorset receive appropriate education and career support to boost recruitment but also retain our primary care workforce in Dorset. It makes sense for us to work with Shirley and her team at Nuffield Health to support their excellent events for GPs as part of our education programme.”
