Simply Networking: A Success Story

When Amanda Reuben of Bijou Recruitment happened to mention in a Chamber Simply Networking event that she was a recent arrival to Westbourne, little did she know that this would lead to a friendship and now an online course that gives job seekers the inside track on today’s job hunting process.  In the same breakout room happened to be Shirley Hensher, the Change Agent, a career and business coach who is also a recent arrival to Westbourne.  Shirley said “it was great to discover a Chamber member living so close to me.  I was keen to meet Amanda, compare our experiences of re-establishing our businesses in a new location and see if we could support each other.  We had a socially distanced coffee on the beach, just minutes from where we live and hit it off immediately”.

That first conversation led to Amanda referring a client to Shirley who was looking for career direction and practical C.V. help.  Amanda says “we have very similar values and sense of humour and it turned out that we’d both worked in Dickins and Jones way back in the 80’s.”  A few coffee meetings later and they decided to put their heads together and created a course which combines Amanda’s recruitment experience with Shirley’s work helping clients find career direction.

“More and more people are finding themselves job hunting, many for the first time in years.  Amanda’s perspective is vital” says Shirley.  “If job hunters don’t understand how to work with recruiters (be they specialists like Amanda, internal functions or agencies) and how small errors in approach can have a big impact, they will waste precious time.  Their applications may never see the light of day leading to frustration and diminishing confidence”.  “I can tell participants what to do but it has far more impact coming from Amanda; insight rarely offered on standard courses.”

“Our online course will take professionals through all the practical considerations of finding a job in this challenging market; from building relationships online and with recruiters, the do’s and don’ts of  writing a C.V. and covering letter, and creating a personal brand” says Amanda.  “We are firm advocates of networking in the job-hunting process.  After all, we are proof that you just never know where those initial contacts might lead so long as you take the time to follow up and stay in touch.”
