Academic achievements and personal triumphs of student at Weymouth College were celebrate last week at an annual awards ceremony.
The College hosted its Student Awards 2024 on Thursday evening, with winners coming together with their family, friends and teachers to celebrate.
The event was also attended by the Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Jon Orrell; Amandra Davies, Corporate Director for Education and Learning at Dorset Council; and Steve Webb, chair of the Board of Governors at Weymouth College.
Guests were greeted with live music by the College’s student band on arrival, along with drinks served by Catering & Hospitality students and a fun photo booth.
They then sat down for a three-course meal, also prepared by the Catering & Hospitality students who work in the College’s Avenue Restaurant.
Welcoming guests, Mr Webb described the event as his “favourite night of the year”, being able to celebrate the “great achievements” of students. He also thanked teaching staff and parents and families for supporting the winners.
Weymouth College Vice-Principal for Curriculum, Kelly Bush, commented on the College’s achievements, saying: “Across the board, the College is performing at tremendously high levels which we’re very proud of, and we’re also really proud that our students benefits from the fantastic experience here.”
Mr Bush led the awards ceremony, welcoming tutors across all College subjects and levels to introduce their winners.
The top award – the Principal’s Award selected by Principal and CEO Julia Howe – was presented to Ben Brown, who also took home the Routes Into and Re-Engagement Provision Student of the Year.
Ben is currently studying the College’s Step Forward into Education Level 2 course with aspiration to moving onto a Public Services course with the ambition of joining the police. He was praised for the commitment, dedication and enthusiasm shown to his studies amid personal health issues.
Ben’s tutor Ashleigh Lewis commented: “Ben really is an inspirational, dedicated student who goes above and beyond to reach his goals. He is an amazing person, and after all he has been through, deserves to receive this award.”

The Student Awards came amid a busy end to the academic year for Weymouth College. Performing Arts students recently hosted their well-received production of Guys & Dolls, while Music students are currently on tour playing live at local venues, and Art students are currently showcasing their work in their end of year exhibition at the College. The College also recently hosted a successful Open Event with more than 200 visitors coming through the door.
