Supporting Dorset’s Agricultural Community: HK Law launches HK Law’s Agricultural Question Time

The agricultural sector is experiencing one of the most significant periods of change in a generation. From subsidy reform and shifting land use priorities to evolving inheritance tax rules, succession planning pressures and increasing regulatory complexity, farming families and rural business owners are being asked to make more strategic decisions than ever before.

At HK Law, supporting the agricultural community has long been a core part of our work. We advise farmers, landowners and rural businesses across Dorset and Somerset, providing joined-up legal support across land, private client, family and corporate and commercial matters. This holistic approach reflects the reality that decisions about land, business and family are often deeply interconnected.

In response to these challenges, HK Law is hosting two free Agricultural Question Time events this March in Blandford and Ilminster. The events are designed to offer clarity and practical insight at a time when many in the sector are reassessing their future plans.

Blandford, in particular, is a natural location for these conversations. With strong links to the surrounding rural community, it provides an accessible setting for farmers and rural business owners facing increasingly complex legal and financial considerations.

Rather than a traditional seminar, the events will be run as an interactive Q&A. Attendees are invited to submit questions in advance and take part in open discussion with an expert panel covering topics such as succession and estate planning, inheritance tax reliefs, land and property issues, business structures and financial planning.

By bringing together professionals who regularly advise agricultural clients, the events highlight the value of joined-up advice and long-term thinking. Guests will also have the opportunity to network over a light breakfast before the discussion begins. The local constituency MP and representatives from the CLA will attend both events.

Laura Staples, Head of Private Client at HK Law, explains the motivation behind the events:
“Farming families and rural business owners are facing a period of real uncertainty and change, particularly around succession, tax and future planning. These events are about creating a space where people can ask the questions that really matter to them and hear clear, practical advice from professionals who understand the agricultural sector. Our aim is for attendees to leave feeling informed, reassured and better equipped to plan ahead with confidence.”
The events are open to everyone involved in farming and agricultural businesses, but places are limited and booking is essential.
