Swim school entrepreneur wins silver in prestigious business awards

Kristin Maguire founder and Managing Director of Individuality Swimming, a swim school serving 2,300 people across Dorset each week, has received a silver award in the Best Businesswomen Awards.

Kristin, a successful entrepreneur and mum-of-three who started her business from nothing more than 20 years ago, was a finalist in the 2023 Best Businesswomen Awards. She took silver in the Best Businesswomen Working with Children and Families category – an award open to women in business across the UK who are making a real difference to the lives of children and families.

Kristin said:
“I am so proud to win this award, and to be recognised for the value the business brings to children and families in Dorset. We have an amazing community of swimmers, and our customers are so loyal and positive – our success has been built on their word-of-mouth recommendations.

It is a privilege to be a woman in business doing something meaningful and making a positive difference to people’s lives.”

Individuality Swimming’s mission is to provide high-quality, individualised learning for everyone – from Aqua Natal classes, to parent and baby sessions, to small group swimming, with no more than five children in a group, to one-to-one teaching.

It operates out of 14 locations across Dorset, seven days a week, including its own pool in Ferndown. Individuality is also a registered training academy and has trained 65 swimming teachers over the past few years.

Winners of the Best Businesswomen Awards were announced at a glittering Gala Final on September 22nd at the Hilton Wembley.
Adds Kirstin:

“I am passionate about helping people of all ages gain water confidence and learn to swim; it is such a vital life skill, especially in a coastal community such as ours. And I believe in our personalised approach, and creating a safe, supportive, environment for all swimmers.

“I love being a woman in business and I love what I do. After all the hard work I’ve poured into Individuality Swimming, to be recognised with this award is a wonderful endorsement of the service we offer and what we do for our swimmers and their families.”

Founded in 2015, the Best Businesswomen Awards recognise and reward female business talent across an array of industries. More than 5,500 people have entered the awards since their launch, which have raised over £40,000 for charity over the years.

Editor’s Notes:

Individuality Swimming provides a range of swimming lessons at 13 locations in Dorset.

Their small group swimming lessons, which have no more than five children in a group, start from three years and ensure children get the individualised attention they need to learn this essential life skill.

Parent and Baby swim classes are for babies from six weeks to toddlers up to three, and make use of songs and games to help the children feel confident and become independent in the water.

For pregnant mothers, Aqua Natal classes offer fitness components in the water, minimising stress on the body.

In addition, Individuality offers one-to-one swimming lessons for swimmers of any age or ability, providing maximum flexibility and one-on-one attention.

All Individuality Swimming teachers hold Swimming Teachers Association or Swim England Qualifications, have an enhanced DBS check and are Rescue trained. Individuality attained the STA Swim Star mark from the Swimming Teachers Association, they are a registered Swim England Swim School, and a founding member of the STA Institute of Aquaphobia.
