Taking care of business at healthcare conference

Healthcare providers received invaluable advice about overcoming challenges in the sector at the first event of its kind held by a regional law firm in Poole.

The inaugural Healthcare Conference, held by Ellis Jones Solicitors at RNLI headquarters in Poole, provided a platform for thought leadership, legal updates and open discussion.
It brought together care home operators, service providers, charities and professionals working across health and social care.
Delegates heard about such matters as changes in employment law, data protection and the importance of understanding residents, patients, and clients’ legal and financial affairs.

Nigel Smith, Managing Partner, said: “Businesses, charities and organisations in the health and care sector face a myriad of challenges. Only recently the government announced immigration reforms which are likely to severely curtail the recruitment of care workers from overseas

The UK’s population continues to age, while the health and social care sector has also grown at a rapid rate.

As the trusted legal advisor for many in the sector, it made sense to hold our first Healthcare Conference to provide advice, information, and reassurance across a wide range of subject areas.

We look forward to continuing to support healthcare professionals navigate this complex and ever-changing landscape.”

Speakers from Ellis Jones included Head of Employment/HR services Kate Brooks, Head of Business Services Neil Cook, Senior Associate Solicitor Diane Pearce, Senior Associate Solicitor Henrietta Frew and Senior Associate Solicitor/Head of Court Protection Magdalena Lipinska.

They were joined by Kerry Saunders FPFS, Cert CII (MP & ER) from Heritage Investments and Lucy Corner from Cornerstone Care Solutions.

Subjects included:

  • Sales and purchases of care homes
  • Importance of understanding prospective residents or clients’ legal and financial affairs
  • Overview of recent disputes concerning care providers and risk management
  • Care home resilience.
  • Employment law and HR update – covering changes to legislation, tribunal case law and best practice
  • Data protection risks and challenges for healthcare providers

Attendees from The Potteries, Care UK,  Macmillan Caring Locally and others from Dorset and Hampshire were those at the event.

According to the House of Commons Library, about 1.59 million people worked in the adult social care sector in England in 2023/24.

It says that in 2022, there were 12.7 million people aged 65 or over in the UK, making up 19% of the population, which is projected to rise to 22.1 million people, or 27% of the population by 2072.
