The BU Carbon Pricing & Markets Research Team of experts from the Business School and the Faculty of Science & Technology will give an update of recent and anticipated developments in the UK Carbon Pricing system (the UK ETS).
Some important matters to be discussed:
1. How is UK business (especially your business) affected by the UK Carbon Pricing System? The existing Carbon Pricing system is the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) a so-called cap-and-trade system with a trajectory of reducing ‘free allowances’ with the UK’s aim of reaching Net Zero by 2050.
2. What are the implications of the UK’s new Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) that will come into effect from 1st January 2027?
3. What is the impact of the Seventh Carbon Budget (published on 26th February 2025) that has set ambitious targets for further reductions in limits to greenhouse gas emissions that are expected to be enshrined in UK law when the Seventh Carbon Budget is presented to Parliament?
4. Is there a need for more information about how the UK Government might support SMEs and Micro-businesses?
5. Is there a possibility of the UK Government extending Sustainability Reporting including ‘Net Zero Transition Plans’ and Carbon Reporting to SMEs?
6. What is the future for carbon reporting? There may be no mandatory reporting but is voluntary reporting and analysis of carbon emissions and carbon pricing (carbon accounting) becoming more important for SMEs due to stakeholder perceptions and business efficiency considerations?
7. Does the UK Carbon Pricing System (current and planned) need revision, adjustment or refinement? The overall question! On all these matters and many others we would be particularly interested to hear your views.
