The Power of a STEM based Placement Student

Most businesses we speak to are still facing challenges in recruiting fresh talent. With demand outstripping supply, especially in some specialist skills and sectors that rely on STEM-skills, and employers having to adapt to the needs and expectations on the next generation of workforce, this can limit a businesses ability to thrive.

We might have something that can help – student placements. A placement student can be a cost-effective way to develop and retain your organisations talent pipeline by bringing in fresh ideas or run a special project.

Bournemouth University’s Faculty of Science and Technology offers employers of all sizes the opportunity to recruit a placement student in the following areas:

⛏ Archaeology & Anthropology
🎮 Creative Technology
💻 Computing & Informatics
⚙ Design & Engineering
🌍 Life & Environmental Sciences
🧠 Psychology

So how can placements work for you? There are a number of clear benefits to having a placement student in your business. You have the opportunity to recruit someone who:

  • Will bring a new perspective and a fresh approach to your business
  • Is highly motivated, eager to learn and has the ability to assimilate new information quickly
  • Has strong technical skills
  • Can develop on the job and have experience of the latest technologies and concepts
  • Can form the basis of your graduate recruitment
  • Can undertake a variety of projects to support your business
  • Is available to start in July and work through until they return to university the following year.

So what can you expect from an undergraduate from Bournemouth University? By the time our students go on to do a work placement, they have had two years of work-related study. They are starting to think about life after university and are eager to get experience of a working environment. By this time in their student journey, our students are used to taking responsibility for their own learning. They are adaptable and will fit quickly into your work environment and have experience of the latest technologies.

Who we are looking for?
We have placed a multitude of students in a wide range of firms and professional organisations. We look for companies that demand the highest level of performance from their employers, as this is what we impress on our students. In return, we expect students to have an opportunity to gain an insight into the operations and management of the organisation they’re working for and to enhance their critical thinking, team working and interpersonal skills.

What our other Dorset Chamber members say about our placement students:

“Recruiting BU placement students has allowed us to tap into some of the best emerging developer talent and has historically provided a pathway to permanent employment within the business.  This has been a huge benefit to TDSi from a recruitment point of view both in terms of identifying and developing talent and in reducing some of the associated costs of hiring new team members.  It has fostered innovation and improved staff retention by building loyalty and providing tailored skill development – ultimately contributing positively to a dynamic and committed workforce. The team is now the Centre of Excellence for a Worldwide Group for the SMB market which will add to the opportunities we can extend to placement students.”  TDSi, Poole

“At Parker (Heatric) we work with Bournemouth University to secure Intern appointments for our site in Poole.  These positions are key to our business for two reasons, they provide vital resource to support important engineering projects and they also support in us meeting our future professional deployment by exposing future talent to our business and vice versa. The success of this relationship and the calibre of Bournemouth University applicants has highlighted the value of Internships to our business and this is something we aim to continue to develop.” Parker (Heatric), Poole
