The shop equipping the ex-homeless for work

Christmas Woodcraft Sessions Educating Families About Homelessness.

Family Woodcraft workshops were launched this month when local charity project, Doorstop Shop, provided hands on experience in carpentry skills.  The sessions provided an opportunity for local families to find out how the charity works alongside those who are ex-homeless in becoming work ready.

Dad Andy said:
“As parents we loved having the chance to do something practical with the boys away from screens, where we got the chance to work as a team together.  It was great for them to see the Doorstop Shop where the items for sale had been made by those who are ex-homeless.”

The Doorstop Shop provides training and purpose for those who are ex-homeless.  The initiative was set up by local charity Faithworks as an outlet for the wooden goods made in their carpenters workshop by those who have now moved off the streets.  All money made from sales goes directly back in to the project.

Rob Cox, Doorstop Shop Manager, said:
“We walk alongside those who are ex-homeless as they change their lives.  The primary goal is that they are learning new skills whether practical skills in the carpenters workshop as well as life skills such as team work, cooperation and how to overcome obstacles in healthy ways.”

Community is at the heart of the project with strong links with St Mike’s and St John’s Churches hosting both the shop and the workshop.  The first Christmas Woodcraft sessions were held where families were able to visit the shop and craft their own wooden reindeer and Christmas trees, while enabling the families to find out more about the project.

Caleb, 8 years, said: “I loved that we got to make our own designs.”
Isaac, 10 years, said: “I loved the creativity, every minute was worth it!  It’s an amazing place, I recommend it!

The workshop is one of a number of work skills placements the charity provides to enable those coming off the streets to get work ready.  Placements such as on the gardening team combined with training in life skills ensure people are equipped, ready for moving into their own homes long term.

Mum, Heather said: “We had such a great time! We have a reindeer and a tree that will come out each year and memories that will last a lifetime.”
