Coastland College was delighted to welcome James Baker, best known for his appearance on The Traitors, to campus this week to speak with Horticulture students about his career as a professional gardener.
While many recognise James from the hit BBC series, his visit to the College’s Kingston Maurward Campus, near Dorchester, focused on his professional journey within the horticulture industry, running his own business GreenBaker Gardening, based in Weymouth.
Speaking openly with students, James shared how he came to gardening professionally in his mid-30s, reinforcing the message that it is never too late to pursue a new direction. He expressed his genuine enthusiasm for working outdoors and the fulfilment he has found in building a career connected to nature.
Encouraging students to follow what makes them happy, he emphasised that success comes from committing to something you truly enjoy and being willing to put in the effort to grow and develop.
Drawing on his experience, he also highlighted the importance of hands-on learning, resilience and adaptability – qualities that closely reflect Coastland College’s commitment to preparing students to be future-ready for industry.
Students were given the opportunity to interview James, asking thoughtful questions about his career progression, industry advice and what continues to inspire him in his work. The session also included a behind-the-scenes glimpse into his time on The Traitors, adding an extra level of excitement to the visit.
The event provided valuable real-world insight, helping students connect their classroom learning with clear career pathways in the horticulture sector.
Coastland College partners closely with employers and industry professionals to ensure students gain practical knowledge, confidence and the skills needed to succeed beyond expectation. Guest speakers such as James Baker play an important role in bringing industry to life and inspiring the next generation.
The College extends its thanks to James for taking the time to support and motivate students as they continue to grow their skills and shape their futures.
