A Dorset structural steel company has won through to the finals of a top industry away for its role in a BZ$33m project in Central America.
John Reid & Son Ltd (REIDsteel) has been nominated for the prestigious Construction Industry Choice title in the 2018 Galvanizing Awards for the flagship Belize Civic Center.
The 130-strong company performed the structural design, detailing and fabrication – including the cladding and glazing – in Christchurch before shipping it to the Central American country.
Now it is facing fellow finalists in an online vote at https://www.galvanizing.org.uk/construction-awards/ before the awards ceremony on Friday June 8 at the Royal Aeronautical Society in London.
Galvanizing is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel for protection from the elements and ease of maintenance.

The Construction Industry title is a new addition to this year’s awards, which are organised by the Galvanizers Association.
REIDsteel has exported to more than 140 countries in nearly a century of trading. Like its other buildings, the Belize Civic Center was designed and constructed to withstand such natural disasters as earthquakes and hurricanes.
The $33m Belize Dollars (£12.7m) Civic Center in Belize City officially opened at the beginning of May. It has been one of the largest construction projects in the country’s history.
A total of 750 tonnes of steelwork was required for the 39,000 sq ft complex, including a structurally optimized steel frame with hot rolled and hot dip galvanized sections.
It also included a roofing system spanning 200 feet, together with all the terraces for approximately 4500 seats and all the suspended floors consisting of a galvanized composite metal decking system suitable for cast-in-situ concrete.
The glazing package, undertook by Reidsteel’s glazing division included curtain walling and aluminium framed windows.
All were manufactured “in house” at their Christchurch facility in the UK, containerised and then shipped to Belize.
