Some love the sea for its sense of calm, its vastness, bright blue colourways and its rhythmic calm. A relaxing connection to nature. What could be better than a sunny day, on a warm beach with a calm, safe sea?
Yet others appreciate more its raw power, its drama expressed through changing colours and moods. It’s constantly morphing and no two moments are identical.
When its stormy, clean blues are beaten away by rich blends of greens, dark ultramarines, burnt umbers, greys, and dramatic ivory surfs. Hints of sangria red are woven into the turbulence.
Art-zag was approached in spring of this year to create a large painting of depicting this untamed energy.
It’s always great to gain a commission especially when the overall theme is clear and yet there is wide scope for interpretation. This is not a theme I usually work with but it was certainly one I was excited to explore. But what was required?
Then one windy day stood high above the beaches I saw and captured a scene crying out for this painting.
A few people against a vast sea, finding the raw power and noise of the waves and salty wind invigorating. Perhaps they are also finding some solace in this slice of wild, feral nature.
The contrast with the dog walkers maintaining their good habits despite the stampeding wind struck home. The walker in shorts and a bright red top defying the conditions particularly drew my attention.
‘That’s us’ said my excited client, linking this image to his workgroup. ‘We are forever battling against a sea of challenges yet enjoying the adventures and winning through. I’ll like to think I’m wearing the red jacket’.
Perhaps we can all see ourselves in one of the characters, or in the nature of the scene. The joy of any painting – or any scene – is that it can create a meaning that resonates personally for you.
The painting 150cm x 100cm is now destined to have pride of place in a busy office.
If there is a local scene you wish to have captured by a local artist, ‘art-zag’ would be delighted to have a conversation and explore more about it.
