Women’s Yoga: to help women going through perimenopause and menopause

We are delighted to be launching a new yoga class at our studio in Christchurch, Dorset this September for women going through the perimenopause and menopause.

Qualified yoga therapy and women’s health yoga teacher Diana Briggs will be teaching the class which aims to support women dealing with symptoms, offering breathing techniques, support and information that can help manage some of the symptoms.

Perimenopause…. Menopause….

Many people are aware that the menopause is when your periods stop but are less familiar with the term ‘perimenopause’. There is, in fact, a lengthy list of symptoms that you could suffer from during the years of perimenopause. Perimenopause occurs when you start to present with symptoms due to hormonal changes but are still having periods. Menopause is the stage when you have not had a period for 12 months.*

The symptoms of perimenopause can range from the well-known hot flushes to:

  • joint pain
  • mood changes
  • migraines
  • brain fog to name a few.

On their own, these symptoms may be uncomfortable and manageable. But putting all these symptoms together can lead to a very difficult and challenging time for the individual and their families. Many women lose not just their confidence, but end up losing their job, their partner and their sense of self.

Having the right information is vital to helping you decide how to move forwards, be that naturally or medically. The severity of symptoms varies greatly and getting the correct help and support is so important. Perimenopause is not something to ‘get through’. No awards are given out for those that make it without medical help. Likewise, there is no shame in taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Sadly, there are very few NHS menopause clinics. Diagnosis can be hard to confirm but do not be afraid to get a second opinion.

There are some fantastic blogs and information to help women going through the menopause and perimenopause, such as:
