After furlough – what happens next?

Poole-based Inspire Professional Services has welcomed the Chancellor’s update this evening, setting out how the Job Retention Scheme will change over the coming months, continuing to support employers across all sectors, before eventually ceasing at the end of October.

Chris Downing, Director at Inspire, said: “With the easing of lockdown measures, there is a clear direction in how the government is balancing safety with the economy.

“The part-time changes to the Job Retention Scheme are a welcome addition and the Chancellor should be praised for accelerating this element of the furlough provision.

“We know that many business leaders are struggling to judge when someone may be needed back at work, so having the flexibility to bring employees back, part-time from 1 July is a real benefit, alongside the gradual increase of employers’ responsibilities to pay salaries.

“The phasing out of the scheme always needed to happen as it was simply unsustainable given the costs involved, so this seems a sensible and careful withdrawal of the relief.”

Inspire, in collaboration with fellow Dorset Chamber members Ellis Jones Solicitors will be holding a free interactive webinar this week, focusing on the options for employers – who currently have staff on furlough – once the government begins to reduce its contributions to the Job Retention Scheme from August.  A Q&A session will follow, giving all attendees the opportunity to ask questions to the expert panel.

Inspire launched a programme of free business advice webinars at the start of the lockdown, which have so far been attended by over 350 business leaders, covering a range of topics related to the government’s measures to help businesses during the pandemic.
