Birthday Bonanza

Langside School, operated by Dorset’s disability charity Diverse Abilities, has celebrated its 60-year anniversary since opening in October 1959.

The school hosted a birthday afternoon tea with families and staff from past and present met to view old memorabilia, pictures, and share anecdotes.

Principal Jon Seaward said: “It was amazing to see so many faces from the past, many of which I’d heard of but never met. I was joined by my two predecessors, between us we cover about 45 years of leading the school.

“Clearly the opportunity to return to Langside meant so much to so many people, the atmosphere was amazing, we were joined by past staff, pupils and friends from the last 50 years or so.

“The success of Langside is due to 60 years of striving for acceptance, equality and unwavering commitment to our children.”

Celebrities have also been sending birthday wishes, including Harry Redknapp, Sharon Davies and David Walliams, and the charity has been sharing these on social media.

The celebrations were rounded off with a drinks reception hosted at Colten Care’s Bourne View, located next to Langside School. Local business representatives, charity trustees, senior management and support staff from Diverse Abilities enjoyed celebrating the care the charity has given over the past 60 years.

Mark Aitchison, Colten Care Chief Executive, said: “As Langside’s next door neighbour, we were thrilled to host the school’s 60th birthday celebration. It’s all part of us building a lasting relationship with Langside and Diverse Abilities and supporting them in the amazing work they do for children and families. Happy Birthday, Langside!”
