Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital is celebrating the fourth anniversary of the opening of Dorset’s first private cardiac centre – coinciding with the hospital completing more than 1,000 cardiac procedures.
Opened in 2015, the Nuffield Health Bournemouth Cardiology Centre offers patients a full cardiac service, including echocardiography and catheterisation laboratory, an out-patient diagnostic and interventional day case facility. The centre oversees the full patient pathway, from managing the initial consultation through to pre-admission assessment and caring for the patient on the day and following the procedure. A cardiac rehabilitation programme is also in place to help patients return to normal activities, while educating them on topics such as nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
David McNair, hospital director at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, comments: “Our hard-working and designated team of specialists in cardiac care, which includes nurses, physiologists, radiographers and consultants, have carried out 1,100 day case procedures since the facility opened four years ago. This is a fantastic achievement and has had a positive impact on the lives of many patients and their families.
“Patient safety and quality of care are of utmost importance to us and since opening the cardiac centre in 2015 there have been no reported post-procedural complications or emergency transfers to a surgical centre from our day case procedures. Over the years we have grown and developed this service to ensure that our staff are able to deliver great care to our patients.”
One of the centre’s first patients, Linda Marshall, underwent an electrophysiology (EP) ablation following investigations which revealed she was suffering from atrial fibrillation, an abnormally fast heartbeat. Linda says: “I was the first patient to have an EP ablation procedure at the Nuffield Health Bournemouth Cardiology Centre, a procedure which has given me a new lease of life. My illness affected so much of my life, I wasn’t asked to look after my grandchildren when I was ill and that really upset me. I’m just so grateful to the Nuffield Health cardiac team for all they did to get me back to health, everyone in the team was fantastic providing great care and looking after me. I love my life now.”
Continual investment in the centre has enabled the team to undertake a full range of procedures, including treatment for cardiac rhythm disorders, simple and complex device implantations and treatment for blocked arteries.
