‘Eco warriors’ appointed to spearhead law firm’s war on waste

Ellis Jones Solicitors has appointed a team of ‘eco warriors’ to spearhead a ‘war on waste.’

The seven-strong team – one for each of the firm’s offices – is championing recycling initiatives as part of a major initiative.

The Dorset-based law firm has already introduced a range of measures including:

  • Installing recycling facilities in its six offices
  • Replacing disposable plastic cups with glass
  • Rolling out new Kappris printing software which defaults printer settings to the most eco-friendly alternative

The ‘eco warriors’ were appointed on the suggestion of Rebecca Suthers, an associate and chartered legal executive in the wills, trust and probate team.

She said: “Following the airing of the TV programme Blue Planet I approached Ellis Jones about running a project to identify where, and how, we can lessen our environmental impact.

“With the firm’s full support I emailed everyone, seeking a warrior from each of our offices, together with one from our marketing department and facilities.

“The warriors meet every one to two months to share ideas and suggestions which we can then put forward to the partners. We also have a regular slot in our internal newsletter, where we share our eco tips, and any petitions which might be of interest.”

Future ‘green’ initiatives planned include seeking reusable eco-friendly coffee cups; recycling a range of items from plastic based stationery and coffee pods to stamps, biscuit wrappers and coloured milk tops, and installing plumbed-in water dispensers.

Nigel Smith, Managing Partner, said Ellis Jones was working closely with Ideas2Action, a registered charity which runs community recycling projects across Dorset. The firm also fully backed Recycle Week which took place from September 24 to 30.

He added: “We’re determined to play our part in becoming as environmentally friendly as possible.

“It was a great suggestion by Rebecca to appoint eco warriors and I’m sure that they will have a big, and beneficial, impact on how we run our business in the future.”
