First carbon neutral care home praised as ‘trailblazer’ by Care England chief

Eagles Mount in Poole, part of the Luxurycare group, has received a glowing review from care sector chief Professor Martin Green OBE after becoming the UK’s first carbon-neutral care home.

Luxurycare’s Eagles Mount Green Community was officially certified carbon neutral after investing £25k in green energy infrastructure and carbon offsetting.

And its efforts have been heralded as sector-leading by Professor Martin Green OBE, Chief Executive of Care England, a representative body for small, medium, and large providers in England.

Professor Martin Green OBE said:

“Eagles Mount is a trailblazer in developing carbon neutral social care services. Across the globe governments are delivering tough environmental targets and the care sector will have to play its part in delivering a more carbon neutral future.”

Care England is the largest representative body for independent social care services in the UK, whilst Professor Martin Green is one of the care sector industry's most respected voices. Luxurycare’s managing director said the company is, “very proud and honoured to have their work recognised by such a respected member of the care community.”

This pioneering residential care home, part of a group of five homes in Bournemouth and Poole, partnered with specialist company Carbon Neutral Britain to calculate its carbon footprint and offset its total emissions through financial support for international projects which help reduce greenhouse gasses in the Earth’s atmosphere.

In all, the home’s carbon footprint, measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, was 163.08 tonnes, produced directly and indirectly from its activities over the space of the year.

The calculation included everything from gas and electricity to staff travel and inbound deliveries. The home has also invested in solar panels to help minimise its environmental impact.

Mandy Kittlety, Managing Director at Luxurycare, said:

“Luxurycare might be a small provider, but we pride ourselves on thinking big, and seeking innovative ways to improve the way we work and the care we offer. We’re never shy about doing things differently, which is why we took it upon ourselves to pursue the goal of making one of our homes carbon neutral.

“We were delighted to achieve carbon neutral status – and to now have been praised as sector-leading in this regard is the icing on the cake. But we won’t be resting on our laurels, and we’re already looking at how what we have learned during this process could be useful in our other care homes, and to our colleagues across the sector.”

Eagles Mount will be investing more in the ‘green community’ at the home. The care home plans to use more environmentally friendly cleaning and laundry products and source more food from local, organic suppliers, amongst other schemes and projects.

Through Carbon Neutral Britain’s Climate and Woodland Fund, the care home has funded internationally certified carbon offsetting renewable energy and forest projects around the world, including hydroelectric power in the Amazon and China, wind power in the Philippines, and reforestation in Nicaragua.
