FOCUS ON PROTECTION: No time to lose

742,000 dead a year … Not a warzone … Not a natural disaster … BUT the world’s workplaces.

Cancer caused by work exposure to carcinogenic substances accounts for more deaths than work accidents, but it is an avoidable cancer. In the UK alone, almost 14,000 new cases of cancer are registered a year – 4,000 because of asbestos, and 10,000 linked to exposures from silica dust to diesel fumes. Workers risk getting lung, skin or bladder cancer because of what they do for a living, and thousands will die as a result. But with understanding of the risks and the correct equipment to use, this can be prevented.

Many employers are unaware of the impact of carcinogenic exposure … and many don’t know what to do about it.

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, IOSH’s “No Time to Lose” campaign aims to get the causes of occupational cancer more widely understood.

Tower Supplies offers free workplace resources to help organisations educate to beat occupational cancer – timely as it’s World Lung Cancer Day on 1st August.
