The Importance To Guide Others

For a candidate who is looking for a senior role, a recruitment consultant should be more than just someone who keeps track of vacancies.

Sally Bennett, Executive Manager with TeamExecutive, sees her role as being a mediator, advising both an employer and a candidate as they get to know each other.

The job-hunting process can be taxing, so Sally’s relationship with the candidate tends to start with discussing their wellbeing.

“I think women have always been pretty good at having those open conversations but I am seeing more men being open and talking about their frustration – especially the male senior leaders who are looking for work at the moment, through no fault of their own,” she says.

“It can be a downward spiral if you are not careful because Dorset does not produce a high level of senior roles, so it can feel very, very slow.

“The first conversation I have with them is about their wellbeing and what to expect in the Dorset market. I say, don’t expect everything to just start again and don’t under-sell yourself, because you will create rejection.”

A consultant who understands both the data and the human feelings involved can be a valuable resource for both clients and candidates.
