Paving the way for additional port improvements’

Woodmace Ltd, the Poole based civil engineering, groundworks, and reinforced concrete frame specialists, are proud to have secured a project to deliver pavement and dock edge works to the King George V docks for Associated British Ports (ABP) in Southampton.

ABP, Southampton is the UK’s number one vehicle handling port, handling 900,000 vehicles per year. It is also Europe’s leading turnaround cruise port, welcoming around 2 million passengers annually and is home to the UK fleets of the largest cruise line operators in the world. It is also home to the second largest container terminal in the UK and handles more than one million containers annually.

The project comprises of work to existing balustrade/ crane rail, main slab replacement, new barriers, drainage, dock side lighting and works to dock edge/waterside. Approximately 5,000m2 of existing paving will be replaced located by the scrap metal berth operations, with all works being undertaken in a ‘live’ operational port environment.
Woodmace are delivering the civil engineering work directly for ABP and this competitively tendered contract award it builds on our experience of working at Southampton Docks.  Woodmace have undertaken a number works to dock repairs and recently the ground works, foundations and drainage works to the flagship Horizon Cruise terminal which involved dock side working and deep drainage which was impacted by the tide. To overcome the challenges of tidal working, Woodmace had two teams working shift patterns (some starting at 4.30am) to consider the tide as well as works around a main storm drain.

The works at KGV docks will also have an element of waterside working.

“Woodmace are delighted to be working directly for Associated British Ports, to deliver these civils works to KGV dock.  We will work collaboratively to ensure a successful delivery, minimal disruption to port activities, whilst providing high levels of quality and safety.”
