STARS Appeal Fundraising Boosted By Local Contractor And Salisbury Reds

Acheson Construction Limited are the Principal Contractor working on the new housing development nearing completion on the corner of 194 Castle Street and 5 Wyndham Road.

The Talisman Homes and Perbury Group development, next to the Salisbury Reds depot has presented many challenges in terms of limited space and access on the site, particularly for storing materials and accommodating welfare cabins for site operatives.

The Salisbury Reds bus depot very kindly allowed Acheson Construction to use part of their land to store their containers whilst working on the second phase of the project directly next to the depot.

As a token of appreciation, Acheson offered a goodwill donation in which Ian Challoner, the Depot Engineer at Reds confirmed his chosen charity to be the Salisbury District Hospital Stars Appeal.

The Stars Appeal is Salisbury District Hospital’s Charity. Each year, projects funded by the charity help thousands of local people at Salisbury District Hospital to get better faster, return home sooner and have a more positive hospital experience.  The charity recently launched their latest major campaign to raise £1.5million to buy a second MRI scanner. A second MRI scanner at Salisbury Hospital will enable over 10,000 people each year to have their MRI scans faster and at their local hospital in Salisbury, avoiding the need to travel to other hospitals or use a mobile scanner in the Hospital car park. And cancer, stroke, heart and many other patients will benefit from the very latest MRI diagnostic techniques, reducing the need for invasive procedures. So far over £800,000 has been raised.

Graham Branagan, Consultant Cancer Surgeon and Chairman of the Stars Appeal MRI Scanner Campaign commented “Thanks to our new friends at Acheson Construction and long-term Stars Appeal supporters Salisbury Reds, we’re now another step closer to a second MRI Scanner for our Hospital. Having two MRIs will mean that local people can always have their MRI scan at their local hospital and not have to travel elsewhere and that we can offer the very latest MRI techniques to patients with prostate cancer, heart problems and to those that have had a stroke. It will help us make people better faster and get them home from hospital sooner.”

Ian Challoner at Salisbury Reds commented “When asked by the Acheson Project Manager Paul Coombs if I could help in any way with regard to access for the completion phase to their project, of course I immediately said yes as I feel it is important to help our neighbours even if they are temporary. When Paul said that if I was in agreement Acheson would like to offer a remuneration to a charity of my choice I was elated and of course I instantly put forward the ‘Stars Appeal’. Firstly, as they are Salisbury Reds Chosen Charity and secondly, the Stars Appeal is looking to raise funds for a second MRI Scanner to which I have used this service a few times!”

Paul Coombs, Acheson Project Manager added “Acheson Construction’s neighbours and particularly ‘Reds’ have been great and for this reason we wanted to show our appreciation to the local community. From a personal level, the long-term treatment I received at Salisbury Hospital saved my right hand so I am deeply pleased to support this world class facility”.
